The Service Committee, with the help of many volunteers, sponsors and supports many projects at St. Andrew and in our community. Some of these include the following:
Soup Kitchen: On the third Thursday of every month, St. Andrew volunteers prepare and serve a meal at the Salvation Army in Suffolk.
Joyful Noise Offering: On the second Sunday of each month, “loose change” is collected for the Joyful Noise Offering (formally 2 cents a meal program). These funds help pay for the supplies that are purchased for the Soup Kitchen meal…even a small monthly donation certainly makes a “joyful noise!”
Reverse Offering: A slip of paper is given to every person as they exit the sanctuary after the worship service on the second Sunday of each month. The paper suggests an item that is needed for donation to the food pantry, and it is returned to church the following Sunday. St. Andrew donates this food to the Suffolk Presbyterian Church Food Pantry, who in turn distributes the food to such programs as the Geneive Shelter, the Center for New Hope, the Salvation Army, Social Services, and Isle of Wight Christian Outreach.
Meals on Wheels: Every Friday, members of St. Andrew deliver meals to the homebound residents of Suffolk. The Meals on Wheels program is managed by Obici Hospital.
Compassion Weekend: The first annual Compassion Weekend at St. Andrew was held in March 2007. Eight service projects were organized and members of the congregation put those projects into action! Those projects included: highway clean-up, church grounds clean-up, singing for the elderly, children’s program, meal preparation for those in need, Prayers & Squares quilting, Building Suffolk, and a Youth Group clean-up project at a Norfolk church. Many hard workers shared the love of Christ with their neighbors that weekend and made a difference in our community!
Compassion Weekend 2008 is scheduled for March 8 - 9.
